Rejection & Grading FAQ

Do the same grading and rejection standards apply to a small volume as they do to a large load?

Short answer: The underlying principles are the same (contamination, sorting, and correct identification all still matter), but buyers are often more lenient with minor issues on a small load simply because the absolute value at stake is lower and it's not worth the friction of a detailed inspection — for larger volumes, more careful and consistent sorting becomes proportionally more important since the value (and potential loss from poor sorting) is much greater.

Why scale changes buyer behaviour

A minor sorting imperfection on a small bag of scrap represents a trivial dollar amount either way — the same imperfection across a much larger load represents real money, which is why buyers apply more scrutiny as volume increases.

What this means for casual sellers

For small, occasional sales, basic care (removing obvious attachments, roughly separating major material types) is usually sufficient without needing to be perfectionist about it.

What this means as your volume grows

As you sell more regularly or in larger quantities, investing more consistently in proper sorting pays off proportionally more, and buyers are likely to apply closer scrutiny that makes cutting corners more costly.
