Rejection & Grading FAQ

What are the most common material misidentification mistakes sellers make?

Short answer: Confusing zinc die-cast for aluminium (zinc is notably heavier for the same size), assuming all "shiny grey metal" is a single category when it could be aluminium, zinc, or stainless steel, and not recognising that galvanized steel is fundamentally steel (not zinc) despite its zinc coating are among the most frequent misidentification errors, all of which can lead to disappointment when a buyer's assessment differs from a seller's assumption.

Why visual similarity causes confusion

Several common metals share a similar grey, silvery appearance to the untrained eye — weight, magnetism, and other physical properties are more reliable identifiers than colour alone, but aren’t always intuitive to check.

The most consequential mix-ups

Zinc versus aluminium (a significant density and value difference) and galvanized steel being mistaken for a zinc product (when it’s overwhelmingly steel by mass and value) are the two most common and most consequential misidentification errors for sellers.

What to do if you’re unsure

Rather than assuming and being disappointed by a differing buyer assessment, a quick weight comparison against a known reference, or simply asking a buyer to help identify uncertain material, avoids the mismatch entirely.
